What Does the TikTok Shop Repeat Purchase Rate Measure?

Two different numbers travel under this label, and they are not interchangeable.

The first is the share of platform sales coming from people who had already bought on TikTok Shop before. Earnest Analytics tracked that share at 64% in November 2023 and 81.3% in February 2024, using anonymised household credit and debit card records.

The second is a retention rate: the share of first-time buyers who come back within a set window. These measure different things, and the platform-level sales share runs far higher than any buyer-level retention figure.

February 202481.3%

Earnest notes one caveat that rules out simple arithmetic here: a customer can count as both new and existing within the same month, so the remainder is not a clean “new customer” share.

TikTok Shop Repeat Purchase Rate vs Other Platforms

Earnest measured how many first-time buyers returned five months after their first purchase, applying the same method across seven platforms.

TikTok Shop led at over 27%. Whatnot followed at 22% and Temu at 20%. Instagram Checkout came last at 1%.

Repeat Purchase Rate by Acquisition Cohort

Earnest also split buyers by the month they first purchased. Over 35% of shoppers acquired in September 2023 bought again two months later, against 19% of the December 2023 cohort.

Earnest attributes the gap to the outperformance of early cohorts picked up during the 2023 holiday shopping period.

Earnest indexed how likely each age group was to spend at TikTok Shop against the average shopper during 2023.

Earnest reports that 35 to 44 and 45 to 54 year olds also index slightly above the general population, without publishing a figure for either group. Sales grew fastest among households earning $55,000 to $90,000 a year during the platform’s first six months, a band straddling the US median household income.

Creator content is the trigger for most of those orders, which is why video completion rate benchmarks matter to sellers hoping past buyers see a product again. Sellers weighing creator costs against that return can compare brand deal rates by niche.

What Repeat TikTok Shop Buyers Spend On

Earnest compared how TikTok Shop customers split their apparel spending against the average shopper over the 12 months ended February 2024.

TikTok Shop customers put 26% of apparel dollars into off-price department stores and 11% into fast fashion, against 24% and 7% for the average shopper. They spent less at the higher end.

Where Repeat Buyers Shop Outside TikTok

Around 97% of TikTok Shop customers also shopped at Amazon in the same 12-month window. Etsy reached 55%, Temu 39%, Old Navy 38% and Shein 37%.

These are overlapping shares of one customer base, so they do not sum to a market. Every repeat order on TikTok Shop is won against retailers the same buyer already uses.

TikTok Shop Repeat Purchase Rate and 2026 Sales Growth

EMARKETER forecasts $23.41 billion in US TikTok Shop sales for 2026, a 48.0% rise after 108% growth in 2025.

NielsenIQ measured an 84% sales increase across a different window, March 2025 to February 2026, and recorded over $1.3 billion in sales during the final two months of 2025.

Growth is slowing while spend per customer stays modest at $118, which puts more weight on purchase frequency. Buyer counts are also broadening, a shift visible in TikTok’s audience by country.

Over Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2025, TikTok Shop took more than $500 million across four days, with shoppers making a purchase up nearly 50% year over year and over 760,000 livestream sessions drawing 1.6 billion views.

Teams planning 2026 budgets can set these against wider TikTok marketing benchmarks and the split between paid and organic performance.
