How Fast Does TikTok Hashtag Reach Decay on the Trending Charts?

More than 47% of trending hashtags drop out of their market’s Top 100 within five days. Only 26.7% stay longer than 14 days.

Those figures come from Globalisation of TikTok Trends, a Publicis Groupe and TikTok white paper that tracked the top 200 trending hashtags in seven markets over six months.

Persistence here means time spent in a Top 100 ranking, not views. A small fraction of hashtags lasted past 100 days, tied to seasonal events, product launches or lasting cultural relevance.

Which hashtags survive past two weeks?

Two types cleared the 14-day mark: utility hacks and cultural anchors. Vietnam’s #Meovat, meaning “tips,” works as a crowd-sourced class that users save and remake, much like the formats behind educational content engagement on TikTok.

Japan’s #DanjiriFestival represents the second type, built on a centuries-old Osaka festival. Single-moment trends such as jokes, news reactions and memes fade fastest, according to Publicis.

Publicis also tracks what it calls Earned Participation: 60 to 150 days of community momentum from one well-designed creator template format.

55.9% of Australian TikTok Trends Fade Within a Work Week

Publicis Groupe ANZ’s Cultural Fluency engine found 55.9% of trends in Australia disappear within a single work week. The median trend lifespan in Australia is three days.

Category changes the clock. Lifestyle and vlog content in New Zealand posted a median lifespan of 74 days, while self-transformation content in Australia sustained engagement for around 27 days.

How trending hashtags spread across markets

Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam share nearly 70% of their trending content, with a Jaccard similarity score of 0.68 out of 1.0. Japan’s similarity score with neighbouring markets stays below 0.25.

Publicis estimates a campaign launched in one Southeast Asian market has a 60 to 70 percent chance of organic traction in neighbouring countries within days. Audio runs on its own timeline, covered in these figures on how fast TikTok sounds get adopted.

Reach follows a similar curve. Metricool found TikTok posts collect 96% of their total reach and nearly 98% of total interactions within the first 10 days.

That sample covered 2,314,756 posts from more than 92,000 accounts on Metricool’s platform. Metricool describes performance as holding fairly level across the 10 days instead of spiking on day one.

Metricool puts the strongest posting window at 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with 8 p.m. as the peak. Other publishers’ hour-level results sit in these posting time and reach benchmarks.

TikTok vs Instagram content lifespan

Instagram front-loads harder. Metricool’s 2026 Instagram study puts about 70% of views in the first three days.

Reels collected 65% of views and 61% of interactions in three days. Static posts and carousels collected 76% and 75%.

The TikTok figure measures reach over 10 days, so the two platforms’ numbers are not a like-for-like pair.

Do Hashtags Slow Per-Post Reach Decline on TikTok in 2026?

Every per-post metric fell by close to a third between early 2025 and early 2026 in Metricool’s sample. Its users published 72.10% more videos and nearly 140% more image and carousel posts over the same period.

Hashtags moved the other way. Hashtag-driven traffic rose 114% year over year, and posts with at least one hashtag received nearly 5% more views and more than 9% more interactions.

The For You Page still delivered 72.70% of video views. Account size shapes how much of that reach holds, as these follower-to-engagement decay figures show.

Search drove nearly 4% of impressions on the average video, per Metricool. Discovery through the search bar is broken down in this TikTok search usage data.

The five-hashtag cap

TikTok began showing a “Maximum 5 hashtags” warning to users in August 2025, as reported by Social Media Today. TikTok had not explained the change when the report ran.

Metricool’s guidance matches the cap: one or two specific tags, never more than five. Caption wording carries its own measured effects in these question vs statement caption tests.

#fyp Views Ranged From 32.9 to 56.3 Billion a Day in April 2025

The platform’s largest hashtag oscillated rather than decayed. Daily #fyp views peaked at 56.3 billion on April 12, 2025 and bottomed at 32.9 billion on April 18.

The April 18 drop of 16.8 billion was followed by a 15.6 billion rise the next day. The authors’ 3-day moving average declined from April 14 to 23, then climbed on April 24 and 25.

The authors link the swings to a weekly cycle and cite a weekend lift of up to 30%. The dataset covers one hashtag over 14 days, recorded at 9:00 PM each day through Exolyt.

Cumulative totals for #fyp and other large tags sit in this list of trending TikTok hashtags.

What Share of TikTok Posts Get Deleted After Posting?

In a near-complete slice of TikTok posts from April 10, 2024, deleted posts made up 12% of posts 26 days after posting. At 215 days, the share reached 20%.

TikTok reports removing about 1% of posts. The McGill-led researchers read that gap as a sign that most deletions are user removals.

Posts released at the 0th second of a minute averaged 3,899 views, against 2,502 for other seconds. The authors tie these posts to scheduling tools and heavier use of broad tags such as #fyp, without isolating the hashtag effect.

FAQs

How long do TikTok hashtag trends last?

Most fade within days. More than 47% of trending hashtags left their market’s Top 100 within five days, and 26.7% lasted beyond 14 days, per a six-month Publicis–TikTok study of seven markets released in April 2026.

How long does a TikTok video keep getting reach?

About 10 days. Metricool’s 2026 TikTok Study found posts collect 96% of total reach and nearly 98% of interactions in that window, based on 2,314,756 posts from January–February 2025 and 2026.

Do hashtags still help TikTok reach in 2026?

Modestly. Hashtag-driven traffic rose 114% year over year in Metricool’s early-2026 data, and posts with at least one hashtag drew nearly 5% more views and more than 9% more interactions.

How many hashtags can you use on a TikTok post?

Five. TikTok began showing a “Maximum 5 hashtags” warning in August 2025, as reported by Social Media Today. Metricool’s 2026 guidance recommends one or two specific tags.

Reddit users often debate whether #fyp still works. What does the data show?

No collapse in volume. #fyp logged between 32.9 billion and 56.3 billion daily views from April 12 to 25, 2025, per Exolyt data. Metricool still says generic tags like #fyp do little for individual posts.
