No dataset from TikTok or any analytics firm sorts follower counts by the date an account was opened, so a true TikTok average follower count by account age does not exist.

The nearest published measures are Pew Research Center’s 36-follower median, Socialinsider’s 2025 growth rates by account size, Metricool’s yearly tier movement and TikTok’s 30-day eligibility rules. Each one appears below with what it measures and when.

Does Account Age Change a TikTok Follower Count?

No published study measures it directly. The datasets that come closest track follower tiers, posting volume and yearly growth instead of creation dates.

Distribution runs through the algorithm. Metricool found the For You page delivered 72.70% of TikTok video views in its January–February 2026 sample.

Pew matched survey answers with 869 valid account handles from 2,745 surveyed users. The fieldwork dates to August 2023, and it is the most recent median follower figure found for this article.

Most accounts watch rather than post. In 2023, 52% of U.S. adult users had ever posted a video, and 40% had publicly visible videos.

The median poster had six public videos over the account’s life and 149 likes received. The most active 25% of users produced 98% of public videos.

Posters followed nearly four times as many accounts as non-posters and had more followers themselves.

Small Accounts in U.S. Users’ Following Lists

Accounts with fewer than 5,000 followers made up 38% of the 227,946 accounts followed by 664 U.S. adult users in April 2024.

More than half of those small accounts had posted fewer than 20 videos over the account’s life. A quarter had never posted.

Growth rate drops at every step up in size, and every tier grew more slowly in 2025. Socialinsider reports an average 33% decrease across the dataset.

The rate equals followers gained divided by followers at the start, multiplied by 100. The dataset covers 2 million videos from 214,507 profiles active January 2024–December 2025.

No tier sits below 1,000 followers. Interaction trends for these five bands appear in our follower-to-engagement decay breakdown.

Views split by size. Average views per post at 1K–5K fell from 860 in 2024 to 350 in 2025, while 100K–1M rose from 25,198 to 34,900.

How Many TikTok Accounts Move Up a Follower Tier in a Year?

Metricool found 16.47% of TikTok accounts grew into a higher follower category between January–February 2025 and January–February 2026. Instagram ranked second at 8.93%.

Movement concentrates below 100,000 followers, where 44% of accounts grew over the year. Above that line, 3.34% of accounts reached 1 million or more.

Per-post results fell over the same window. Video views dropped 31.30%, reach 28.73% and interactions 31.17%, while published video volume rose 72.10%.

Average TikTok Follower Count vs Lifetime Posts

The median creator with 1 million or more followers had published 777 posts over the account’s life. Creators under 10,000 followers had a median of 154.

Top creators post several times per week, while the least followed post around once a week. Their videos average 39 seconds against 21 seconds.

Pew defines creators as accounts with at least 5,000 followers built mainly through social media. It found 118,358 of them among 227,946 accounts followed by 664 U.S. adults.

Of those creators, 11% have 5,000–9,999 followers, 42% have 50,000–499,999 and 10% have more than 1 million.

None of these three rules sets an account-age minimum on the pages reviewed. Creator Rewards also requires age 18 or older and original videos over one minute long.
